External Influence and Our Internal Thoughts

external influence“We are the product of what we focus upon.”

External influence is extremely important to control. It has a ripple effect in your life for good or bad. You may have heard a common phrase used by computer programmers, “garbage in, garbage out.” This is so true. Since we are the product of what we focus upon then we must, at all cost, control what we allow to influence us.

External Influence: Friends

Choose friends very wisely. They will have a great influence on you and your thought processes. Surround yourself with people who are constantly negative and habitually critical and you will eventually become the same. Someone once said, “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” Another great and true statement.

If you desire a future of success then surround yourself with people that are positive, encouraging, uplifting and those that make you stretch to be more than you currently are. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you can change them. Remember that one bad apple will soon spoil the entire basket. The hard choice here might be to say good-bye to some of your “friends” and replace them with others that will help you toward your life goals.

External Influence: Senses

Guard your eyes and ears. These are direct lines to your brain and will effect the programming of the mind. Be careful what you read, watch and even what you talk about. Leave the trash outside. Only allow those things into your eyes and ears that will help to promote the positive thoughts that you want to cultivate.

Most movies and television shows won’t build you up and won’t leave you with the proper thoughts that you are trying to maintain. These, at best, are simple distractions and will throw off the focus on your goal. At worst, they are negative programming for the mind. Read, watch and listen to things that will program your mind in a positive direction.

We become what we think about. We are the product of what we focus upon. Our thoughts are molded by the influences that we allow. Control these influences and you are that much closer to controlling your thoughts and achieving the success in life that you desire.
